How is posture related to the chakras?

We can stand with a stooped posture closing in on the chakras, or with an upright posture with the chakras in balance, When we are stooped then we close off our important chakras such as the throat, heart and manipura chakra. Practising yoga asanas encourages straightening of the posture and hence encourages a bringing back of balance to the chakras.

What is detachment in terms of yoga philosophy?

Detachment does not mean to physically cut yourself away from the outside world but rather it means not letting your happiness depend on something in the outside world. Many things in life bring happiness and it is nice to enjoy a balance of these things - however being attached to any one of these things too much can lead to an addiction as you feel that this is the one thing that makes you happy. A balanced life is one in which you connect inwards and feel peace and happiness within. You then learn to live in the present and to enjoy whatever each present moment in life brings - so that life turns into many present moments lived in happiness.

Why is it important to live in the present?

Living too much in the past can bring sadness and memories. Living too much in the future can lead to anxiousness over events that have not yet passed. True happiness lies in living in the present and teaching the mind to enjoy every moment of life.

How can you stop your anger, your sadness or any negative emotion?

Never suppress a negative emotion or try to bottle it up otherwise you are just holding in the emotion. Try and understand it compassionately. If you feel anger then understand why you are angry. If you feel sad then understand why you feel sad. Understand the emotion, accept that it had its place and its reason for being there. Then realise that experiencing this emotion does not bring you happiness and let it go. Allow your mind to move on and look for emotions which bring happiness.

Are positive emotions important too?

Yes it is very important to fill the mind with positive emotions such as peace, joy and happiness.
